Which Cutter for my 25-30 hp tractor ? 48" or 60" rotary cutters (brush hog)

We feel obligated to talk a length with customers and make sure they understand the +/- of maxing a tractor's PTO power with tools that are sometimes "ran all day long" in large areas doing extra tuff duty.

Rotary cutters and PTO irrigation pumps fit this description best.  Extra care for maintenance, greasing, radiator cleaning precautions, "closer watch" of heat related issues, ground speeds, safe turns -- all come into play.

No "ONE YARDSTICK" can measure everyone's situation." "There are always exceptions, but we haven't sold any less than 30 engine hp tractors with 60" rotary cutters (brush hogs). We have sold several 30 hp tractors with 84" rear mounted finishing mowers. They've done well."

We always FIRST recommend a less than 60" cutter for all tractors less than 30 engine HP and sometimes less than 30 PTO HP.

If the buyer CAN ACHIEVE their goals with the less than 60" cutter----These factors always apply:

1. Safety, front end weighting to avoid loss of stability
2. Narrow space cutting advantages (example: between trees)
3. Wear / tear / overheating.

We are in the Southeast where extra tuff briars, Bermuda Grass, Johnson Grass, Swamp Growth, Kudzu, Bamboo, "and you name it -- grows wet, tuff and thick," etc.

If a user does not have to deal with these type issues in cutting his terrain --- a large cutter may be fine.

Common sense when using a cutter teaches the experienced operator to keep the engine and power take off RPMs as high as possible and then vary the ground travel speed MPH to match mowing conditions. As long as the cutter is turning at recommended speeds and not "bogging down" the tractor engine-- you'll be OK and the "cut" will be clean and the clipping discharged properly.
